Sky Sports online and mobile free for subscribers

Satellite giant Sky have announced a new deal offering Sky Sports subscribers a six month period of free Sky Mobile TV and Online player services. As from July 12th until December 31st, Sky Sports subscribers can watch mobile and online TV services as competition hots up in the digital UK TV market.

This means that existing subscribers can watch premium sports content on a number of mobile devices such as smartphones, iPad, PC, Mac and set-top boxes. Streams of full Premier League football and Sky Sports News will be available to view. There is one downside though, as after December 31st users (who will have probably forgotten about cancelling) will be automatically charged the standard Sky Mobile TV subscription cost.

“Delivering Sky Sports and Sky News content over multiple devices – including HD over the set top box, online and on mobile – gives our subscribers more choice and control over when and where they enjoy our services, providing more value and convenience,” said Sky chief operating officer Mike Darcey. “By offering innovative access to Sky Sports across Mobile TV and Sky Player, we are providing a truly accessible multiplatform experience for our customers.”

The Sky deal comes as competition for Sky Sports customers becomes fierce with BT Vision, Top Up TV and Virgin Media all looking to capitalise on Ofcom’s move to enforce a wholesale price cut on Sky Sports channels. Of course many subscribers already paying top dollar for Sky, may have expected to get online and mobile access free anyway as part of their subscription.

Sky Sports Coming To Internet TV Providers For Less

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

Satellite broadcaster Sky have been told to lower the prices it charges rivals for its premium sports content including premiership games. The ruling made by Industry regulator Ofcom, could well open the way for Sky’s sports streaming to become available on online tv services such as BT Vision.

The move has forced Sky to lower its pricing to providers of sport channels by around a quarter, following a three year long inquiry into the pay TV market. Sky must offer Sky Sports 1 and 2 to rival broadcasters for more competative prices.
