Project Canvas Chooses Kip Meek As Its Chairman

Project Canvas, the internet based digital television consortium formed by the BBC, ITV, BT, Channel 4, Talk Talk and Arqiva, has decided to appointed Kip Meek as its chairman.

Meek, who at this moment is a board member of Ingenious Media and a director at Phorm, will step down from these roles.

At Project Canvas, his role will be to oversee the appointment of a chief executive officer who hold the daily operational responsibility for Project Canvas.

Meek takes on his role with immediate effect and takes over where BBC director of future media and technology Erik Huggers, who has been the projects chair for the last year.

Meek says: “Internet technology creates unlimited choice and can also give people real control over what they watch, and when they watch it.”

“Project Canvas will integrate the broadcast and on-demand worlds to make this possible via the TV. It will also allow third-party business models to thrive through an open platform, bringing the benefits of next-generation TV to anyone who wants it.”

He also added: “With the backing of these six substantial partners, we have the opportunity to transform television.”

Before Meek joined Ingenious Media, he held responsibilities at Ofcom, he also chaired the European Regulators Group, and was also instrumental in the establishment of BT’s infrastructure company, Openreach. But before joining Ofcom, he was managing director of Spectrum Strategy Consultants.

Channel Five pulled out Earlier this month of any further investment in Project Canvas but since Richard Desmond has bought Channel Five he will be looking to join Project Canvas again.

Project Canvas Could Launch By September And Target 7 Million Viewers

Project Canvas is coming

After a quiet period, Project Canvas may be available to service providers as early as September and it is looking to target around 7 million viewers in the UK. The cutting edge internet tv project which is still awaiting final approval from the BBC Trust is a joint venture between the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Five, Arqiva, TalkTalk and BT.

Latest developments come after the OFT decided not to investigate complaints by rival broadcasters. The news that the BBC are targeting 7 million viewers comes from The Inquirer, ITV controller of strategy Simon Pitts said that the project has identified its core market to be internet users who want subscription-free television. “We already have a target market. Project Canvas Will Probably Be Scrapped Says 3view MD

Freeview set-top box supplier, 3view have along with Sky and Virgin, joined in the criticism of Project Canvas. 3view MD John Donovan has said that he is “concerned” about the potential market impact of IPTV joint venture Project Canvas and even suggested it should join predecessor – Project Kangaroo and be scrapped.

Director Of Project Canvas Predicts Internet TV Will Grow 70%

IPTV services will grow 70% by the year 2015 says The Director of Project Canvas and Internet TV shows at the BBC, Richard Halton. Speaking to the IPTV World Forum he was talking about the UK market in particular and the world market in general when he talking about the rapid market growth. Sky Chief Slaps Down Project Canvas Again

Whilst the Sky Player is expanding across multi-platforms, Sky are still criticising the BBC led Project Canvas. Chief operating officer of Sky, Mike Darcey has said in an interview with the Guardian that Project Canvas will “distort fair competition” in the nascent market for online video services.

Whilst Darcey agree’s that the internet TV market is expanding, he says it is still sitting at an “embryonic stage of development”. Meanwhile the Sky player has been expanding its online content, after launching on Xbox Live last year. It is set to be included in IP Vision’s FetchTV Freeview platform. Most Freeview/Freesat set-top boxes are now internet enabled and Darcey expects the “pace of change and innovation” in internet streaming to expand as the consumer demand grows.
