So Much For 3DTV, Internet TV Is The Future

I don’t think I’ll ever buy a 3DTV, certainly not until the need to wear glasses all the time is removed. However, I’m very interested in a TV which connects to the Internet. And it seems I’m not alone.

3DTV

3D has taken over Hollywood recently, with every other film released having a 3D after its name, and 3D elements added. Some films have worked well in 3D, such as Avatar, but others really haven’t made the grade. And now we’re expected to adopt 3D for the home as well.

With the world having adopted HDTV pretty conclusively by now, tech manufacturers are keen to push the next big thing. Which many companies, such as Sony and Toshiba, gambling heavily that 3D televisions will be the next big mainstream consumer trend.

But wait. It looks as though the real future lies in Internet TV.

Internet TV

Television sets which connect to the Internet are already available. But they’re set to increase in availability and popularity. This is going to be helped by the emergence of several big connected TV platforms.

Google TV is the big one, purely because Google is such a big name with such a major influence. But the U.K. is getting Project Canvas (likely to be renamed YouView) led by the BBC, and there are plenty of others in the offing as well.

iSuppli Forecast

iSuppli recently published a forecast suggesting Internet-Enabled TVs (IETV) will far outsell 3DTVs over the next four years.

Starting with 2010, only 4.2 million 3DTVs will be sold, while 27.7 million IETVs will be sold. iSuppli predicts IETV shipments will grow by more than 50 percent for the next two years, with double-digit growth continuing on after that.

Riddhi Patel, Director and Principal Analyst for television systems at iSuppli, said:

Orange Looking To Join Project Canvas

The Mobile phone company Orange is considering signing up to join BBC backed Project Canvas venture to bring VoD services to the Freeview and Freesat platforms.

If Orange can strike a deal then it will secure the number of Project Canvas partners back to seven after Channel Five pulled out last week.

Last year Orange was looking at buying the technology behind the now defunct Project Kangaroo venture, the broadband TV joint venture between ITV, Channel 4 and the BBC, it was to boost its Orange broadband service and offer a more attrractive package to its customers.

The company pulled out and Arqiva sealed a deal, subsequently using it to launch online TV service SeeSaw. Arqiva is also a partner in Project Canvas.

World Cup online streaming breaks records

Spain may have taken the glory in the the 2010 FIFA World Cup, but online broadcasters are basking in the glory of attracting record audiences with their live streams of this year’s football tournament. With the use of online viewing even more prominent than 4 year’s previously, some of the key statistics from various broadcasters include:

The French Are Catching Onto Catch Up TV

Catch up TV French style

After being dominated by the US and UK, the catch up tv market is starting to make inroads into other Countries. The French are according to a new study, digging tv online. The study shows that around three quarters (71%) of French internet users are making use of catch up tv to view missed shows. They use the internet to catch up (mainly) on US TV shows.

The study comes from from MEC and GroupM Interaction, who discovered that catching up on tv shows online is practised on a regular basis by web users. When surveyed, 76% of respondents said they had made use of catch-up TV services within the previous month. This figure is a rise from 2008 when the figure was 52%.

Over half of viewers (56%) said they use catch up to compliment traditional tv viewing (as most people do) and found that the most popular streams to watch, besides US shows was documentaries and news shows.

The French growth for online tv, is representative of the world in general, as catch up tv is a service most people now use and is still pretty much solely available from a PC.

ITV Go For Double Launch Of Satuday Shows

In a move set to rival BBC One’s new quiz 101 Ways To Leave A Gameshow, ITV1 are launching two new gameshows in one night in an attempt to win a share of the UK Saturday night audience that is currently open to change, due to major shows such as X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing.

At 7:15pm, the first show launched will be Odd One In, an alternative quiz show that the celebrity panel and the audience both take part in. The show, hosted by Bradley Walsh, will include a ‘home’ team panel of singer Peter Andre, and stand-up comedian Jason Manford, who will go up against a guest team of two every week, with the aim of the game to choose the ‘Odd One In’ from a selection of people and animals (e.g. ‘which of these people has a fake beard’) by asking a number of questions. The audience will also play along, with those that have the most correct answers playing in a final ‘special round’ to try and win a cash prize.

The show that follows, at 8:00pm, entitled Magic Numbers, hosted by presenter and former magician Stephen Mullhern, is based on celebrities completing gameshow challenges in order to generate numbers, and if all numbers generated matches a home viewer’s phone number, the viewer could win up to

With YouTube clearly one of the most popular websites on the Internet, it is interesting to see just how big the most-viewed clips actually are.

In a world where music seems to be the main attraction (a majority of the Top 10 YouTube clips are music videos (the highest non-music clip is ‘Charlie bit my finger’ in 3rd)), the fans are casting their verdicts as Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’ battles Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’ to become the most watched video on the most celebrated video site.

The battle between pop stars seems to be spearheaded by the younger generation of artists and fans, with Miley Cyrus (6th & 10th), Lady Gaga (2nd) and Justin Bieber (1st & 5th) all found in the Top 10, sometimes twice with different songs.

Gaga used YouTube as a key factor in her rise to ‘Fame’, with her debut single making a whopping count in You Tube and has never looked back since. Her most watched single, ‘Bad Romance’ has been viewed a mammoth 248,961,678 times with the popularity spiralling like never before. However, she has been overtaken by the Canadian pint-sized sensation Justin Bieber. ‘Baby’ has edged past Gaga with a YouTube count of 254, 331,791 views making him the current YouTube all-time rankings leader.

However, with Gaga only 5M back, his reign isn’t undisputed. Only time shall tell who triumphs in this web war but, at the moment, the pendulum is in the direction of the 16-year-old ‘Baby’-faced singer.
