ITV Go For Double Launch Of Satuday Shows

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

In a move set to rival BBC One’s new quiz 101 Ways To Leave A Gameshow, ITV1 are launching two new gameshows in one night in an attempt to win a share of the UK Saturday night audience that is currently open to change, due to major shows such as X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing.

At 7:15pm, the first show launched will be Odd One In, an alternative quiz show that the celebrity panel and the audience both take part in. The show, hosted by Bradley Walsh, will include a ‘home’ team panel of singer Peter Andre, and stand-up comedian Jason Manford, who will go up against a guest team of two every week, with the aim of the game to choose the ‘Odd One In’ from a selection of people and animals (e.g. ‘which of these people has a fake beard’) by asking a number of questions. The audience will also play along, with those that have the most correct answers playing in a final ‘special round’ to try and win a cash prize.

The show that follows, at 8:00pm, entitled Magic Numbers, hosted by presenter and former magician Stephen Mullhern, is based on celebrities completing gameshow challenges in order to generate numbers, and if all numbers generated matches a home viewer’s phone number, the viewer could win up to

The YouTube Wars

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

With YouTube clearly one of the most popular websites on the Internet, it is interesting to see just how big the most-viewed clips actually are.

In a world where music seems to be the main attraction (a majority of the Top 10 YouTube clips are music videos (the highest non-music clip is ‘Charlie bit my finger’ in 3rd)), the fans are casting their verdicts as Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’ battles Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’ to become the most watched video on the most celebrated video site.

The battle between pop stars seems to be spearheaded by the younger generation of artists and fans, with Miley Cyrus (6th & 10th), Lady Gaga (2nd) and Justin Bieber (1st & 5th) all found in the Top 10, sometimes twice with different songs.

Gaga used YouTube as a key factor in her rise to ‘Fame’, with her debut single making a whopping count in You Tube and has never looked back since. Her most watched single, ‘Bad Romance’ has been viewed a mammoth 248,961,678 times with the popularity spiralling like never before. However, she has been overtaken by the Canadian pint-sized sensation Justin Bieber. ‘Baby’ has edged past Gaga with a YouTube count of 254, 331,791 views making him the current YouTube all-time rankings leader.

However, with Gaga only 5M back, his reign isn’t undisputed. Only time shall tell who triumphs in this web war but, at the moment, the pendulum is in the direction of the 16-year-old ‘Baby’-faced singer.

For a chance for your ‘vote’ to count, here are links to both of the videos that are tussling for top spot:

Lady Gaga – Bad Romance

Justin Bieber – Baby

The next milestone for these two videos is 300M – but who will get there first?

Desmond Seals Deal And Is New Boss Of Channel Five In £104m Deal

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

103.5m.

The deal was sealed with immediate effect, giving ownership to Northern & Shell, the publishing group owned by Richard Desmond. “This is a major acquisition and a long-term project,” said Richard Desmond, who said that he would “invest heavily in talent and content both in the programming we already have and in home-grown programming”.

Richard Desmond went on to say that Coronation Street, The X Factor and Panorama were all programmes he would like the channel to broadcast.

Asked if he was asking the BBC to make shows for his network, he said: “Well, why not, why not? Why can’t we have Panorama on Channel Five? It’s a jolly good programme.”

He added: “Channel Five has proved itself to be a credible and competitive British broadcaster with some of the most sought-after programmes from home and overseas.

“I’m delighted to have taken ownership of the network and I know that, with the right investment, drive and leadership, it can go from strength to strength as a competitive broadcaster and a modern player for the digital consumer.”

Richard Desmond owns both the Daily and Sunday Express’s national newspapers and also owns the Daily Star and its Sunday counterpart, he also owns the celebrity lifestyle magazine OK!. Northern & Shell also owns a series of adult television channels. European legislation means Richard Desmond will not be able to advertise his print titles on Channel Five. He will, however, be able to advertise Channel Five in his publications.

Gerhard Zeiler, the RTL chief executive said: “With a significant recovery of the UK TV advertising market and Five performing well in the first half of 2010, we saw a window of opportunity to realise a transaction based on a fair evaluation of Five.”

Claire Enders, founder of Enders Analysis, said: “Desmond is someone who has a real interest in the media. He is an innovative entrepreneur. The edge he has is the free publicity in the Star, OK! and the Express. He will build the buzz and the glamour in the publications, which is something the channel has been sorely lacking.”

Richard Desmond says he will keep Channel Five as a public service channel. This means a prime slot on the electronic programme guide, but the broadcaster must pledge to screen a certain amount of news and current affairs programming.

He also revealed he will pay the

Could the Growth Of Internet TV Be Slowed By Bandwidth Capping?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

A leading market research company iSuppli, has said that AT&T’s recent decision to setup Capping Its Bandwidth and charge an extra fees for the heavy data usage on wireless devices could present a barrier to upcoming competition from Internet TV.

AT&T stopped its phone plan which has allowed subscribers unlimited Internet access. AT&T is seeking to limit the heavy data usage of smart phones such as Apple iPhone, and the iPad tablet. iSuppli has said that “The caps will make it difficult for any high-quality streaming application hoping to become a true TV substitute to get off the ground without the support of wireless operators”.

YouTube Looking To Take Over Your TV With Leanback

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Leanback - the start of Youtube’s takeover?

Youtube are no longer content showing silly videos they now want a bigger piece of your TV viewing time in their long term strategy for tv domination. The recently launched Leanback gives viewers video streams of their choice, Leanback then automatically shows similar videos. The more videos you watch, the better Leanback can “predict” what you like. It’s a customizable channel for you.

The term ‘Leanback’ refers to the process of watching tv as opposed to sitting on your pc. On the computer, most people sit forward with their faces jammed into the monitor. TV viewers, on the other hand, like to leanback and chill out whilst watching a show. However, watching tv on a computer screen may not be the ideal way to check out Leanback content. Google have already announced GoogleTV which is already looking hungrily at taking viewers from cable and network tv,  and will obviously go hand in hand with the success of Leanback.

But there is plenty of competition for the viewers time. Apple is rumored to be revamping its Apple TV whilst many rivals are also jostling for Web based TV dominance. It could be hard work for YouTube to infiltrate the viewing habits of a nation though. They need to get plenty of long form content for a start. They set out to achieve this by setting up strategic deals with content providers of tv shows and movies.

My feelings are that with Youtube streaming over a billion videos per day, they are in prime position to take over the market. And any way Youtube can make my potato couch lifestyle less stressful is always welcome.

BBC iPlayer Requests Gets A Big Boost From The World Cup

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

The BBC’s Regular monthly performance statistics show that the World Cup 2010 delivered a nice boost to both live and catch-up TV on the BBC iPlayer for June 2010.

The BBC iPlayer received 86 million requests for TV programming across all platforms, i.e. PCs, mobile, games machines other devices, plus requests from Virgin Media TV.

On-demand services made up the vast majority of TV programme requests but it was driven by the World Cup coverage although, June saw a big increase in live TV viewing on the BBC iPlayer, up 4 points to 14% of all requests. Yet despite the boost given by The World Cup (which had record online viewing figures), over the month the total figure was below that recorded back in May 2010 but, it revealed the BBC, is still significantly higher than for June 2009.

It also shows the last three programmes in the Doctor Who Season were the biggest requested programme for the month by some lead, and the finale grabbing 1.32 million viewing requests. There was also strong demand was also for the inaugural Junior Apprentice, and new BBC3 content such as Lee Nelson, Peckham Finishing School and Mongrels and the England v Slovenia World Cup match.

And the analyses also showed that in the month the BBC iPlayer was used for TV at roughly the same time of day as normal TV viewing, although there was more daytime and late-peak use.
